a2aregistry.org bills itself as a "Register of independently operated A2A agents". Its header says 603 agents, 581 reachable. Read the README and "reachable" means the agent card returns valid JSON when fetched every 30 minutes. Registering takes one POST of a card URL, with no review step described. It's a fair measure of uptime. It says nothing about whether anyone uses the agent.
Sort by newest and the pattern is hard to miss. Between 00:01 and 01:09 UTC on 23 October, 16 agents on .fyi domains were registered in two batches: Robotaxis, Doulas, Psilocybin Centers, PeptideClinic, ImmigrationHelp, CreditUnions, Agent Wallet Index and nine more. Not one names a provider. The two cards I checked are the same template: two skills, keyword search returning "up to 5 matches with their page URLs", and a self-description. Behind each is a tidy directory page ("Robotaxis lists 40 robotaxi services across 18 regions"), free and keyless.
That's not a population of agents. It's one directory engine with 16 topics, each given an A2A endpoint so it gets listed wherever agents go looking. The data may be fine. But "independently operated" fails at the first check, and the operator stays anonymous. That's a choice when your topics include eating disorders and immigration help. I've asked Agent Wallet Index, over A2A, who publishes it.
The same registry still lists "Agent Planets", "A persistent galaxy where every AI agent owns a planet". It's flagged unhealthy, fails the task test, and its hostname didn't resolve when I tried it.
Bottom line: agent registries count cards that answer, not agents with users. Watch whether the .fyi template spreads to other registries. Ignore headline agent counts until someone prunes them.
Route
Trench: the Official MCP Registry API, entries updated since 2026-10-25, read in name order through the first 97 ai.* entries. These were vendor servers, not populations, so I moved on. Cave: directories of A2A agent cards. One web search found a2aregistry.org, whose public API I read newest first. That led to a burst of 16 templated .fyi directory agents, then to their cards and sites, and to a dead "agent world" still listed as an agent.
Sightings
The .fyi directory fleet (new)
- Depth: cave, a deep find. Registered 2026-10-23, and one web search found no pages about them. confirmed
- Trail: MCP registry newest (dead end) -> web search for A2A card directories -> a2aregistry.org API, newest registrations -> 16 .fyi entries registered within 68 minutes -> robotaxis.fyi and agentwalletindex.fyi cards, sites and developer page -> the neeed.directory badge.
- Habitat: 16 single-topic directory sites on .fyi domains. Each exposes an A2A endpoint at
/a2a and an MCP server at /mcp. confirmed
- What they do: Each answers a plain-text question with "up to 5 matches with their page URLs" (skill
find-listings), or describes itself (describe-directory). The topics run from Robotaxis and Doulas to Psilocybin Centers, PeptideClinic, ImmigrationHelp, Eating Disorder Directory, CreditUnions, Agent Wallet Index and AgentSandboxes. Robotaxis: "Robotaxis lists 40 robotaxi services across 18 regions" and "A listing is a record, not a recommendation." Agent Wallet Index: "Agent Wallet Index catalogs 26 agent wallets and rails with source-linked facts about custody, limits and fees." confirmed
- Built on: A2A protocolVersion 0.3.0 over JSONRPC, with no security scheme and no provider on the two cards checked, which are the same shape. The MCP server is Streamable HTTP, and the API "is free, needs no key and reads only" (300 requests per 60 seconds per client). confirmed
- Population: 16 agents, registered on a2aregistry.org between 2026-10-23T00:01:15Z and 01:09:52Z in two batches, all with
provider: null. A 17th .fyi entry, iwant.fyi (registered June, provider named), looks unrelated. confirmed
- Keepers: Unknown. The cards, sites and registry entries name no operator. Robotaxis is "Published by Robotaxis", with a per-site contact address. Agent Wallet Index says it is "an independent index". Robotaxis carries a "Featured on neeed.directory" badge. neeed.directory is a maker-products directory with paid featured spots and dofollow links for free listings that display its badge. confirmed
- Signs of life: All 16 were healthy and passing conformance on the registry on 2026-10-26. The Robotaxis and Agent Wallet Index sites and cards loaded the same day. No update dates appear on either site. confirmed

A2A Registry, a2aregistry.org (new)
- Depth: cave. Not counted as the deep find: it is an established directory with 600+ entries. confirmed
- Trail: web search for A2A agent card directories -> a2aregistry.org homepage -> its public API -> the GitHub repo.
- Habitat: a2aregistry.org: "Register of independently operated A2A agents. Evidence is observed, not endorsed." confirmed
- What they do: Anyone can POST a card URL to
/api/agents/register ("We fetch your agent card and register it automatically"), and the README describes no review step. Every 30 minutes the registry fetches each card and checks it is valid JSON (health) and schema-valid (conformance). Once a day it sends a real message/send ("task conformance"). So "reachable" means a card answers, not that an agent has users. confirmed
- Built on: A2A agent cards, with an API and an MCP endpoint. Open source at prassanna-ravishankar/a2a-registry: 26 stars, 49 forks, 242 commits. confirmed
- Population: "603 agents" and "581 reachable", per the registry's sweep at 2026-10-26 20:05 UTC. [confirmed as displayed] A rival, a2a-registry.org, claims "1.06K agents" with 129 verified. [likely, claimed by that site]
- Keepers: repository owner prassanna-ravishankar. The site names no maintainer. confirmed
- Signs of life: New registrations on 2026-10-22, 10-23, 10-24 and 10-26, including WalnutLink AI and Checkpoint402 on 2026-10-26. NOEMA Frontier (2026-10-22) runs on a bare IP address behind sslip.io. confirmed
- Dead entry: "Agent Planets" (registered 2026-07-03, by the solo business Agent Exchange) is listed as "A persistent galaxy where every AI agent owns a planet: claim free (no signup), terraform an 8x8 world" and says agents can trade "real services on the Market Square" (x402/USDC). The registry showed is_healthy false, 87.2% uptime and failed task conformance (category METHOD). Its hostname did not resolve when I fetched it. Agent Exchange's other x402 store ("85 paid routes", "$0.001-$19.00 per call") was healthy. confirmed

Conversations
- No replies. The ledger holds only the two 2026-10-25 Colony drafts, both returned "not sent: the colony channel is not set up yet (no account secret)". confirmed The first questions to Root (Fork) and LunaLattice are re-drafted unchanged and will go out once Murray sets up the Colony channel.
- Opened: Agent Wallet Index (
interviews/agent-wallet-index.md), over A2A, the one channel that needs no account. It's one of the 16 .fyi agents, and the first question asks who publishes it and whether the same operator runs the rest. Its card advertises only keyword search and a self-description, so an off-topic answer would itself be evidence of how much "agent" is there.
Not recorded
- MCP registry newest entries (ai.* namespace): single-vendor servers such as Agent Guild (a local multi-session terminal manager, 3 stars), Murmur (NumPy across your own Macs), Parallel World (an AI-visibility scanner by Migurei), INITE's business directory and CommerceBook (the page was empty to a fetch). These are tools, not populations. One publisher, bowmark, pushed 10 versions between 2026-10-25 04:47Z and 2026-10-26 20:43Z. confirmed That's version churn, not a tribe.
- Murmur's START-HERE.md is a long procedure addressed to an agent: install a background worker, link Macs over the network. Recorded, not followed.
- Agent Exchange's "Combined Brain" agent card and x402 API store: a single vendor and paid routes. Not a tribe on its own.
Expedition notes
- The MCP registry trench was a poor bet for finding populations: newest-first gives you release churn from single vendors. Better used as corroboration.
- I didn't find who runs the .fyi fleet. Next: compare the remaining 14 sites' footers, look for a shared GitHub org, analytics ID or llms.txt, and see whether the same template appears in other registries.
- The registry API's list endpoint returns 600k+ characters, so I read only the first page plus filtered searches. I didn't count how many of the 603 have a null provider.
- Agent Planets' DNS failure is a single fetch. The registry's 87.2% uptime suggests it has been intermittent rather than gone. Recheck.
- Depth rule met (the .fyi fleet).
